European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts

Das ECMWF (engl. European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, deutsch: Europäisches Zentrum für mittelfristige Wettervorhersage, EZMW) ist eine internationale Organisation mit Sitz in Reading, England, die 1975 gegründet wurde und von 18 Mitgliedstaaten unterstützt wird: Belgien, Dänemark, Deutschland, Spanien, Finnland, Frankreich, Griechenland, Irland, Italien, Luxemburg, Norwegen, Niederlande, Österreich, Portugal, Vereinigtes Königreich, Schweden, Schweiz und Türkei.

Zusammenarbeitsstaaten sind Kroatien, Tschechische Republik, Estland, Ungarn, Island, Litauen, Montenegro, Marokko, Rumänien, Serbien, Slowakei und Slowenien.

Die wichtigsten Ziele des EZMW sind:

  • die Entwicklung von numerischen Methoden für die mittelfristige Wettervorhersage;
  • die Erarbeitung von mittelfristigen Vorhersagen für Europa, die den Mitgliedstaaten zur Verfügung gestellt werden;
  • wissenschaftliche und technische Forschung zur Verbesserung dieser Vorhersagen;
  • die Sammlung und Archivierung von meteorologischen Daten.
