Der District, dessen Gebiet in der traditionellen Grafschaft Antrim liegt, wurde 1973 eingerichtet und ist der bevölkerungsärmste aller nordirischen Districts. Bedeutende Orte sind die Stadt Ballycastle, die auch Verwaltungssitz ist, sowie Bushmills, Ballintoy, Armoy, Cushendall, Cushendun und Waterfoot.
