Er wurde im Jahr 2002 vom Weltraumbahnhof Kourou in Französisch-Guayana ins All befördert. Er ersetzt den zuvor ebenfalls auf 23,5° Ost positionierten Satelliten DFS-Kopernikus 3.
Empfang
Die Ausleuchtzone von Astra 3A beschränkt sich auf Mitteleuropa (v.a. Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz) und ist nur dort mit kleinen Satellitenschüsseln zu empfangen. In anderen Regionen Europas muss teilweise erheblich größerer Antennenaufwand betrieben werden, um die Programme, die über Astra 3A ausgestrahlt werden, sehen zu können. Die Übertragung erfolgt im Ku-Band.
