Royal Gold Medal

Die Royal Gold Medal ist ein jährlich vom Royal Institute of British Architects vergebener Architekturpreis. Die Medaille wird im Namen der britischen Monarchie als Anerkennung an eine einzelne Person oder an eine Gruppe verliehen, die einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur internationalen Architektur geleistet hat.

Der Preis wurde 1848 zum ersten Mal verliehen, der Empfänger war Charles Robert Cockerell. Weitere bekannte Architekten des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, die den Preis erhielten, waren Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1925), Frank Lloyd Wright (1941) und Le Corbusier (1953). 1992 erhielt ihn der irische Tragwerksplaner Peter Rice; er war damit der zweite Bauingenieur nach Ove Arup (1966), der die Auszeichnung entgegen nehmen konnte. Eine weitere bemerkenswerte Ausnahme war, dass 1999 die Stadt Barcelona ausgezeichnet wurde.
