Optimal Energy ist ein im Jahre 2004 gegründeter Automobilhersteller mit Unternehmenssitz in Kapstadt, Südafrika.

Vorgeschichte

Seit der Gründung befasste sich das Unternehmen mit der Entwicklung eines eigenen Elektrofahrzeuges, das nach eigenen Vorgaben für den Alltag geeignet sein soll. Keith Helfet, ehemaliger Jaguar-Designer übernahm schließlich die Leitung über die Designabteilung. Eine weitere Vorgabe des Unternehmen ist es, steuergünstige Fahrzeuge zu entwickeln, um den Kunden eine Alternative zu höheren Kraftstoffpreisen und teureren Verbrennungsmotor-betriebenen Fahrzeugen zu bieten.

Finanzielle Unterstützung bekam das Unternehmen vom südafrikanischen Department of Science & Technology (DST) durch den Innovation Fund sowie privaten Investoren. 5.000.000 US-Dollar konnten so für das Projekt aufgebracht werden.

Optimal Energy Joule

Das erste Modell der Marke, der Optimal Energy Joule, wurde 2008 auf mehreren südafrikanischen Automobil-Shows sowie der Mondial de l’Automobile und dem Salon International de l’Auto & Accessoires Genève der Weltöffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Das Design legt sich sehr an den Fiat Grande Punto an und bietet Platz für bis zu fünf Personen. Benannt wurde das Fahrzeug nach der von James Prescott Joule geschaffenen SI-Einheit Joule (J). Die Serienproduktion des Joule lief im Frühjahr 2010 an. So existiert bereits eine kleine Versuchsflotte für den lokalen Markt. Der internationale Vertrieb soll erst 2014 aufgenommen werden. Für die Europäische Union geeignete Einheiten sollen erst später auf den Markt kommen. 85 % der Produktion sollen später einmal exportiert werden. Zwei Akkugrößen sind geplant; mit 24 Kilowatt und mit 36 Kilowatt Speicherkapazität. Die derzeitigen Einheiten haben eine maximale Reichweite von etwa 300 Kilometern. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit des Joule wird auf 130 km/h begrenzt.
