Suba District ist ein Distrikt in der Provinz Nyanza in Kenia. Die Distriktshauptstadt ist Mbita Point. Der Suba District unterteilt sich in fünf Divisionen: Mbita, Lambwe, Central, Gwassi und Mfangano. Der Bezirk grenzt im Westen an den Victoriasee. Neben den 1055 km² Landfläche gehören noch 1190 km² Wasserfläche des Victoriasees zum Distrikt. 16 Inseln im Victoriasee fallen ebenfalls dem Suba District zu, die größten sind Rusina Island und Mfangano Island.[2] Im Lambwe Valley in der Central Division befindet sich der Ruma-Nationalpark.[3]

Wirtschaft

Mehr als 50 % der Bevölkerung leben von der Landwirtschaft, 40 % leben von Fischfang und -zucht.[4] Angebaut werden unter anderem Baumwolle und Sonnenblumen.[5]

Gesundheitswesen

Im Suba District gab es 2005 21 Einrichtungen des Gesundheitswesens, davon zwei Krankenhäuser. Auf einen Arzt kommen mehr als 85.000 potentielle Patienten. Hauptsächlich werden Malaria, Atemwegsinfektionen und Durchfallerkrankungen behandelt. 80 % der Krankenhausbetten sind durchschnittlich mit HIV-positiven Patienten belegt.[4] Die HIV-Prävalenzrate im Suba District betrug im Jahr 2002 34 %.[6] Die Säuglingssterblichkeit lag 2002 bei 11 %, vor ihrem 5. Geburtstag starben 13 % der Kinder.[4] Das Suba District Hospital verfügt über 50 Betten.[7]

Bildung

Der Suba District verfügte 2005 über 172 Primary Schools und 12 Secondary Schools.[8]
