Der CapaCity ist ein vierachsiger, niederfluriger Gelenkomnibus für den Einsatz als Stadtbus, der seit April 2007 serienmäßig von der Daimler-Tochter EvoBus in Mannheim gebaut wird. Der Viertürer ist für Stadtverkehrslinien mit hohem Fahrgastaufkommen konzipiert und verfügt über 193 Plätze, davon 37 Sitz- und 156 Stehplätze.

Da er mit einer Länge von 19,54 m über das maximal zulässige Maß von 18,75 m hinausreicht, ist für den Betrieb auf öffentlichen Straßen eine Sondergenehmigung erforderlich. Das zulässige Gesamtgewicht wird durch eine Doppelachse im Nachläufer auf 32 Tonnen erhöht.

Wie sich anhand der Typenbezeichnung O 530 GL erkennen lässt, stellt der CapaCity eine Kombination der Modelle Citaro G und Citaro L dar. Der Wendekreis des CapaCity entspricht mit 22,85 Meter dem des Citaro G, welcher nur drei Achsen aufweist. Das Wenden wird durch eine Kamera am Heck des Busses erleichtert, welche dem Fahrer auf einem Monitor anzeigt, welchem Kurs der Bus bei gleichbleibendem Lenkeinschlag folgen wird.

Das Fahrwerk verfügt über eine Wank-/Nickregelung, wie sie bisher nur bei Brennstoffzellen-Bussen mit hoher Dachlast eingesetzt wurde. Diese soll durch eine elektronisch geregelte variable Kennung der Stoßdämpfer für Sicherheit und einen erhöhten Fahrkomfort sorgen.

Ein Motor des Typs OM 457 hLA treibt mit einer Leistung von 260 Kilowatt (354 PS) die dritte Achse an. Der CapaCity hat 11.967 cm³ Hubraum und ein maximales Drehmoment von 1.600 Nm. Er muss neben normalem Dieselkraftstoff mit Harnstoff (AdBlue) betankt werden, der für die BlueTec genannte SCR-Technik nötig ist. Als Getriebe ist ein sechsgängiges ZF HP eingebaut.

Einsatz in Deutschland

Als erstes Unternehmen in Deutschland setze die Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG seit dem 4. August 2008 vier CapaCity-Busse im regulären Linienverkehr auf den Buslinien 42, 72 und 81 ein.[1][2]

Seit dem 9. Dezember 2008 fährt ein erster CapaCity-Bus für den Stadtverkehr Tübingen auf der Linie 18[3], am 7. Februar 2009 wurden weitere vier Fahrzeuge angeschafft und verkehren seitdem auf der Linie 5 zu den Kliniken[4].
